How to read the results

You ran the questionnaire and you have numbers. This explains where they come from, what order to read them in, and what each level obliges you to do.

Where the score comes from

Every answer is worth points, and the points are summed three times. These are not three separate measurements: it is the same one, grouped three ways.

  1. 01

Each item is worth 0 to 4

The value depends on the answer, and not always in the same direction: on some items "always" is the worst answer and on others it is the best. Which is why reading the questionnaire by eye tells you nothing — it has to be scored.

  2. 02

    Items sum into a domain

A domain groups the items about one thing: workload, lack of control over the work, hours, relationships. It is the finest level and the only one that says where to intervene.

  3. 03

    Domains sum into a category

A category groups related domains. It shows whether the problem is in how the work is organized, in leadership, or in the environment.

  4. 04

Everything sums into the final score

Cfinal summarises the workplace in one number. It is the one usually asked for first, and the one that says least on its own.

What order to read them in

The reverse of how they are calculated. Cfinal tells you whether there is a problem; the domain tells you what it is. Starting at Cfinal and stopping there is the most common way to satisfy the standard without learning anything.

A workplace can come out at medium risk with one domain at very high. The average hides it. If you are going to act on one thing, act on that domain, not on the average.

And compare across areas before concluding. A calm global result with a night shift in the red is a night-shift problem, not a site problem.

What each level obliges

The five levels are not a grading scale. They are an action scale — what changes is what you have to do.

Level What it means What is required
None No psychosocial risk detected in that domain or category. Maintain, and measure again on the appropriate cycle.
Low Risk present but contained. Monitor, and address whatever shows up in individual items.
Medium Conditions are affecting part of the workforce. Review the policy and reinforce preventive measures in that domain.
High The risk is clear and is probably already having effects. Specific analysis and a documented intervention programme.
Very high The risk is severe in that domain or across the whole workplace. Immediate intervention, a record of the actions, and follow-up measurement.

The actions each level requires are set out in the text of the standard, and are worth reading there before committing to a plan.

Three mistakes that make the result useless

Running it across the company as if it were one site

A 20-person plant's averages vanish inside a 400-person one's. The report comes out immaculate and describes nobody.

Stopping at Cfinal

It is the number presented to leadership and the least actionable one. The domain is where the instruction is.

Measuring once

A diagnosis with no follow-up measurement cannot show the measures worked. And that demonstration is exactly what gets reviewed later.
